Tips to Buy the Best Heart-Shaped Diamond for Engagement Ring

Heart Shaped Loose Diamonds are one unique fancy shape that recently gained popularity as the engagement ring stone. Since the cut makes the diamond shaped like a heart, it becomes a timeless symbol of love. It is not common as a round cut, so here are some useful tips for finding the best quality stone that will be one of its kind.

Diamond grading

You need to understand that fancy cuts like the oval, emerald, pears, and hearts are evaluated in a different way than the other cuts. Cuts like rounds are tested in labs based on a detailed grading system. However, for the fancy cuts, you have to either trust the evaluation by the jewelers or solely decide based on the appeal of the stone.

Since there is no lab certificate grading attached with heart shapes, it depends upon the customer what shape of the stone they will prefer. Some may prefer a rounder heart shape, while others like the elongated one. But symmetry has a role to play in the appearance of the diamond. To judge if the diamond is symmetrical, draw an imaginary line in the middle and see if both sides are equal.

As consumers are most attracted to this diamond because of its heart shape, check the following areas carefully before you invest in one.

Well defined shape

The top of the stone that turns inside is called the cleft. Check if the curving is deep enough because if it's not diamond will loom more like a pear than a heart.

The end of the diamond where the two sides meet is called the point. Without a proper point, the diamond will look round. It is not that the end should be sharp and pointy, but it should be clear enough and divide the stone into two halves.

Best carat weight

Carat means the weight of a diamond. It has become standard to use one-carat diamonds in engagement rings. It can be a good lower limit for heart-shaped loose diamonds also. However, stones lower than that will not be a good choice as the heart shape will be difficult to make out from the smaller diamonds. The larger diamonds are expensive.

Price

Heart cuts are relatively cheaper than round-cut diamonds of the same weight. But, in comparison to fancier cuts, hearts are expensive because of their exceptional and difficult cutting. When selecting heart shapes, you cannot compromise on cuts and carats. If you have a tight budget and still want a heart-shaped diamond for your engagement ring, compromise in areas like clarity and color.

Length-to-width ratio

The consumers, as the jewelers, must have a clear idea about the Length to width ratio. It indicates if a stone will be thick or thin. According to the designer, the ideal length-to-width ratio for hearts should range between .90 to 1.10. Stones beyond that range may be too narrow or too broad.

Apart from choosing the best stone, be careful about the setting. Choose a setting to make sure that the pointed part of the heart is well protected.
