Pear Shaped Loose Diamond - Unique Shape That Makes Each Piece Look Pretty on a Ring or Pendant

Created by Lodewyk van Berquem in the 1400s, the pear shape diamond looks like a tear drop. It is a mix between a round brilliant and a marquise cut with one round end and a point at the opposite side. It was due to the unique cut of the diamond that the precious stone started being used in jewelry. It has been in use for centuries – known as another antique fancy cut that makes each piece look as pretty on a ring or bracelet or swaying from an earring or pendant. With the passage of time, modern pear cuts shine more strongly. Diamonds of such cut are narrow at one end and rounded on the other. Not to mention the body – made of a point, shoulders, and wings. They are cut into a brilliant style – promoting play of light. They are designed to reflect light as beautifully as possible.

It is mounted in different ways – mainly tip is covered to prevent chipping. Majority of diamond lovers prefer to wear pear shape with the point facing your fingertip (if it is mounted on a ring or as a ring’s shoulders). There is another popular way – suspending the jewel from its tip – have it hang from pendants to earrings and necklaces.

Pear Cut Diamonds Have a Well-Deserved Long History of Beauty

Taylor-Burton Diamond is the most popular and notable pear diamond used as a pendant. It got its name after Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton – a 68 carat pear shaped jewel that hung from the bottom of a diamond necklace as it accompanied Elizabeth Taylor to the 1970 Academy Awards.

Earlier (Originally), it was 69.42 carat mounted on a ring. Elizabeth Taylor had trouble wearing it on her hand and commissioned a diamond necklace to be worthy of the pear. She also had it re-cut to shine all the more.

Apart from this pear cut diamond, a 3,106.75 carats of pear cut diamond was derived from the Cullinan Diamond – the largest gem quality diamond ever mined. Many jewels have been cut from it. The Cullinan III is one of the British Crown Jewels – a 94.4 carat pear cut diamond. It was studded on the crown used for Queen Mary’s coronation and necklace – worn by Queen Mary. There is a lot more to talk about the pear cut diamonds – mainly their shape that make them versatile mounts and suitable for a necklace.

Diamonds in this cut have been popular for centuries as hanging elements for commonly used jewelry pieces like pendants, earrings, necklaces. They are usually suspended from the points and used to flank other jewels.
